ENGLISH in Year 4

Spring 2

'When the Giant Stirred: Legend of a Volcanic Island' is an exciting and powerful story that brings nature to life. The book tells the tale of a sleeping giant beneath a volcanic island who suddenly begins to wake. As the ground trembles and smoke fills the sky, the people on the island must face the giant’s mighty power. This dramatic legend helps children understand how volcanoes work, while also exploring themes of respect for nature, courage and community. It is a thrilling story that sparks imagination and curiosity about the natural world.

Through this story, students in Year 4 will be developing their ability to expand noun phrases by the addition of modifying adjectives, nouns and prepositional phrases. They will also choose nouns or pronouns appropriately for clarity and cohesion and to avoid repetition, whilst using and punctuating direct speech.

Our Class Read

Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan

After the class were so engaged in our topic of Ancient Greece in Autumn 2, we have chosen a class novel to reflect this interest.

The story follows Percy Jackson, a twelve-year-old boy who discovers he is a demigod, the son of the Greek god Poseidon. Percy goes on a dangerous quest across the United States with his friends and along the way, they face monsters, gods, and challenges while Percy learns to accept who he is and prove himself as a hero.
