Literacy and Reading

In Reception, we develop children's love of reading through high-quality, engaging story books. Much of our Literacy learning is centred around a special focus book each week, allowing children to become familiar with characters, explore new vocabulary, develop their speaking and listening skills, and inspire their own mark-making, writing and creative activities.

This half term, our focus texts will include:

  • The Colour Monster Goes to School
  • The Rainbow Fish
  • The Great Big Book of Families

Through these stories, children will explore themes such as starting school, friendship, kindness, feelings, celebrating differences, and understanding the diverse families and communities around us.

RWInc

During Week 3 (beginning 14th September), children will begin our phonics programme, Read Write Inc. This is a structured and engaging approach that helps children learn to read and write by teaching them the sounds that letters make.

To begin with, we will focus on the following sounds:

m, a, s, t, d

As children learn each sound, they will practise recognising it, saying it correctly, forming the letter, and using it in simple words. We will send information home throughout the year so that you can support your child's phonics learning and reading journey at home.

Our aim is for every child to develop confidence, enjoyment and success in their early reading and writing as they take their first steps towards becoming lifelong readers. 📚✨
