Maths

This half term in Year 5, we are continuing to build our mathematical understanding through the White Rose Maths scheme. The children will be exploring two key areas of learning: Perimeter & Area and Statistics. These units will help them develop important skills in measurement, problem-solving, and interpreting real-life data. Below is a brief overview of what each block includes.

🧩 Block 2 – Multiplication & Division A

What this block is about:
In this unit, children deepen their understanding of multiplication and division by working with larger numbers and more efficient methods. They begin to use formal written methods and apply these skills to real-life problem-solving.

Key learning objectives:

  • Multiply and divide numbers by 10, 100 and 1,000

  • Use written methods for multiplying 2-digit and 3-digit numbers by 1-digit and 2-digit numbers

  • Use efficient strategies for short division

  • Apply multiplication and division knowledge to multi-step word problems

  • Build fluency with factors, multiples and prime numbers

This block helps children gain confidence with larger calculations and prepares them for more advanced written methods later in the year.

🍰 Block 3 – Fractions A

What this block is about:
This unit introduces children to more complex work with fractions, helping them understand how parts of a whole can be compared, represented, and calculated. Children build on previous learning to explore equivalent fractions and begin adding and subtracting fractions.

Key learning objectives:

  • Identify, compare and order fractions greater than 1

  • Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers

  • Find and create equivalent fractions

  • Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator

  • Begin to work with fractions using diagrams and number lines to support understanding

This block strengthens children’s number sense and prepares them for more challenging fraction calculations later in the year.
