Phonics

We kindly ask that children read at home at least three times a week for 15–20 minutes. Developing strong reading skills is vital, as learning to read – and to understand what we read – underpins all areas of learning. For both children and adults, reading opens the door to knowledge, imagination and a wide range of future opportunities.

At school, we use Read, Write Inc. as our phonics programme. This structured and highly effective approach supports children in developing their reading accuracy, fluency and comprehension. Through its carefully planned, repetitive structure, children quickly build confidence in decoding unfamiliar words, while also gaining the skills needed to support spelling and writing. This consistency allows children to become independent, enthusiastic readers who enjoy engaging with texts.

To further support this progress, it is essential that children read regularly at home and bring their reading book and reading record into school every day. This allows staff to change books frequently, monitor progress and ensure that children are accessing texts that are well matched to their reading ability. Regular book changes also give children the opportunity to explore a wider range of genres, authors and styles, helping to nurture a genuine love of reading.
