Literacy

In Reception, literacy expectations focus on building early communication, reading, and writing skills through play-based, engaging activities. Children are encouraged to listen carefully, join in with stories, songs, and rhymes, and express their thoughts using simple sentences. They begin to recognise letters and the sounds they represent, blend sounds to read simple words, and develop an interest in books. In writing, children practise forming letters correctly, using mark-making to convey meaning, and attempting to write words and short phrases. The emphasis is on developing confidence, curiosity, and a positive attitude toward language and literacy.

Our topics for this half term are Fairy Tales and Winter, including lots of exciting stories and writing activities based on traditional fairy tales such as The Three Little Pigs, Jack and the Beanstalk and The Three Billy Goats Gruff.
